Finding Structure and Purpose in Senior Living

As Culinary Director at University Senior Living, I approach each day with passion—not just purpose. I face new challenges, hear new stories, and always find fresh reasons to feel grateful. I’m excited to share how I arrived in this role, what fuels my dedication, and what a typical day looks like in our community. My work goes beyond preparing meals—it centers on building connections, creating purpose, and making a real difference where it counts.

Culinary team members at a senior living community smile while serving a pasta dish from buffet trays, showcasing fresh dining options for residents and guests.

I became a Culinary Director in senior living because I wanted a structured environment with long-term stability. After years in fast-paced restaurants, I was ready for a role where I could lead, create, and rely on a more consistent schedule. Senior living offered all of that—and it turned out to be the perfect fit.

My experience in high-volume kitchens prepared me well for this role. Working under pressure, leading teams, and maintaining quality sharpened my skills. I learned how critical organization and communication are in leadership. I also worked in both front and back of house, which gave me a full view of the dining experience. At Arrow, it’s not just about the food—it’s about the experience each resident receives.

A More Balanced Culinary Career

What I enjoy most about this industry is the improved work-life balance. The hours are better. The environment is calmer. I can focus on supporting my team and creating a positive experience for residents. Just as important, I get to go home at a reasonable time, which has made a huge difference in my personal life.

Each morning, I check in with my team. I confirm everyone is present, see how they’re doing, and review the plan for the day. Starting with open communication helps set a positive tone and ensures smoother service throughout the day.

Why Senior Living is a Rewarding Path

To anyone considering a culinary career in senior living, I’d say: give it a shot. It’s not like working in a restaurant—but that’s one of the best things about it. The pace is steady. The hours are manageable. Most importantly, you have a chance to build real relationships with the people you serve. If you care about food and people, this career path can be incredibly fulfilling.

To me, success means my team worked together, the meals were executed well, and the residents left happy.

At day’s end, I take the greatest pride in knowing I’ve contributed something meaningful—whether it’s a favorite dish, a heartfelt conversation, or a comforting moment. Thank you for welcoming me into your community and allowing me to serve at your table. I’m truly honored.
