Family involvement in Memory Care is incredibly valuable and, at times, understandably complex. As dementia progresses for a loved one, families often face new emotions, uncertainty, and questions about how to stay connected in meaningful ways. At the same time, Memory Care teams can guide families toward involvement that enhances quality of life for both the resident and the family. As Memory Care Director of University Senior Living, I have seen how purposeful family involvement can go beyond traditional visits. With support and encouragement, families can remain active participants in their loved one’s journey.
I actively engage families by inviting them to host or join meaningful activities alongside their loved ones. Some families have led cooking classes and cookie demonstrations, creating opportunities for interaction while bringing familiarity and joy to residents. Others have shared talents such as playing musical instruments, which helps create a warm and personalized environment. These experiences foster deeper connections and give residents meaningful ways to engage with their loved ones. My approach centers on treating families as valued partners and offering them ways to contribute.

I support families by first creating a welcoming, low-pressure environment where they can feel comfortable reconnecting with their loved one. Families are invited to attend events and spend time in the community so they can better understand their loved one’s current abilities, preferences, and routines. I take time to learn about each family member’s interests and comfort level. That helps me suggest simple and meaningful ways to get involved, whether through joining events, assisting with programs, or eventually leading one of their own.
One example involved a new resident who struggled to adjust after moving into the community. She seemed withdrawn and had difficulty with the transition. In collaboration with our Resident Services Director, we planned a Family Night potluck and families were invited to bring their loved one’s favorite dishes. The event created a warm and familiar atmosphere that encouraged comfort and connection.
During the potluck, the resident became more engaged and visibly uplifted. She enjoyed sharing a meal with her family and interacting with others in a relaxed setting. In the days that followed, she continued to talk about the experience, and we noticed a clear improvement in her mood and overall comfort. That moment reinforced the powerful role family involvement plays in strengthening a resident’s sense of belonging and building community.
My goal is to keep the process simple, welcoming, and personalized so families feel confident and excited about getting involved. I encourage interested family members to connect with me directly or share their interest with any team member. From there, I meet with them to explore their interests and identify meaningful ways they can contribute to the community.
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to family engagement in Memory Care. With intention, empathy, and clear guidance, it can become one of the most impactful parts of a resident’s experience. When families feel supported, empowered, and invited into meaningful moments, the result is often deeper connection, improved well-being, and a stronger sense of community for everyone involved. Whether someone is a family member looking to stay involved or a care professional seeking new ideas, I hope these insights inspire thoughtful, compassionate engagement in every Memory Care neighborhood.
