Cultivating Community Culture

Category: Culture & Traditions

Author: Skye Hookham, Resident Services Director

As Resident Services Director at University Senior Living, I am the energy and engagement designer of the community. My job description specifically states I am to be a “Culture Creator.” Each day, I work to set the perfect tone for our community events and resident engagements.

Providing socialization opportunities in senior living is more than just playing the beloved game of bingo. Beyond the events, essential amenities, and daily care lies the heartbeat of every community – a culture that fosters connection, purpose, and a sense of belonging.

Each monthly calendar features events tailored to the residents’ interests, focusing on key programming elements: physical, cognitive, spiritual, sensory, and social. We always celebrate major holidays in a big way, incorporating traditions from various cultures based on our residents’ backgrounds. Unique to University Senior Living and Arrow Senior Living, each month, we also celebrate several Arrow Traditions. These include focusing on Black History Month, Mom and Pop Small Business Day, Be Kind to Humankind Week, and so many more!

Tailored Events and Adventures: Cultivating Culture and Connection

Tailoring events to fit my residents’ needs, wants, desires, interests, and passions is my favorite way to contribute to the culture of University Senior Living. Meeting residents where they are on their journey is crucial. Discovering what events I can provide for them so they can thrive is also important. One event I particularly enjoy is Show and Tell, where residents can share meaningful items with their neighbors. For instance, one resident showcased his paintings, fostering stronger connections within our community.

I also value organizing outings for residents to experience new adventures, such as restaurants, movies, museums, boat rides, and picnics at the park. These outings allow residents to explore the culture of the greater community while forming shared experiences.

Culture plays a significant role in senior living because it inspires residents to live their best lives. It fosters increased socialization and provides a wide variety of health benefits. Additionally, it fosters companionship and creates a sense of safety and community. Furthermore, it encourages creative expression. Culture enables individuals to be themselves and pursue their inspirations while also inspiring others.

Every senior living community has its own culture built around the engagement and interactions of the residents. I am proud to set the stage for socialization and events for my residents as we continue building and expanding our culture at University Senior Living.
