Refreshing the Community

Category: Uncategorized

Author: Trent Langston, Plant Operations Director

As spring arrives, our team turns its attention to one of the most visible parts of our community: landscaping. Beautiful grounds do not happen by chance. They come from thoughtful planning, seasonal preparation, and steady attention to detail.

After winter, I take a proactive approach to refreshing our outdoor spaces. My goal is to keep them visually appealing, safe, and enjoyable for residents. As the Plant Operations Director at University Senior Living, I focus on the steps that help our community look its best each spring.

Focusing on Resident Joy

When preparing for a seasonal refresh, we look at the community through the eyes of the people who call it home. Operational checklists and maintenance priorities still matter. However, one of the strongest indicators for our team is simple: what makes residents happy?

We pay close attention to the spaces residents naturally use. These may include a favorite garden bed, shaded seating area, or walking path. If an update enhances the resident experience or creates moments of joy, it moves to the top of our list.

Our goal is to create a community that inspires happiness, comfort, and pride. By focusing on what brings residents joy, we can decide what needs attention now and what can wait for another season.

Preserving Meaningful Traditions

A recent seasonal project involved replacing the evergreen tree used for the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony. The tree had started to turn brown. Since it was still under warranty, we contacted the landscaper for an inspection.

The landscaper replaced it with a new tree. Because the tree sits at the front of the community, it plays an important role in first impressions. It also supports the community’s appearance during the Christmas season.

Beyond curb appeal, the tree holds special meaning for residents and team members. The annual tree lighting ceremony creates a tradition everyone can share. Projects like this help us maintain the beauty of the community while preserving meaningful resident experiences.

Planning With Fresh Perspective

To make sure nothing gets overlooked, the Plant Operations Director and Executive Director walk the entire community together. This brings operational and leadership perspectives together in real time. It also supports a full review of the grounds, common areas, and seasonal maintenance needs.

During these walkthroughs, we identify landscaping details, safety concerns, and appearance issues. Then, we address them promptly and effectively.

During spring startup, we often find wear and tear in high-traffic areas. These spaces see heavier use during the winter months. That can lead to damaged landscaping, compacted soil, worn mulch beds, and other areas that need attention.

Moving forward, we plan to close high-traffic areas more intentionally at the end of each season. This will help us better protect vulnerable spaces. Preventive steps may include reinforcing landscaping barriers, winterizing key areas, and identifying spots that need extra maintenance before colder weather arrives.

Looking ahead to next season, we plan to gather more resident feedback. This is their home, and residents should feel comfortable, heard, and connected to the environment around them. Their input will help us make thoughtful improvements that reflect their preferences.

We also plan to add more variety to the landscaping. Softer, fuller textures can enhance the overall appearance and make the community feel even warmer and more inviting.

It is easy to see the finished product, but real success comes from teamwork. Coordination, accountability, and pride help bring each project together. These efforts ensure University Senior Living continues to meet the standards residents expect while setting the tone for the months ahead.
